Feet: Lots of people have them, and lots of people can't draw them (including myself, on both counts.) Fortunately, Ron Lemen is here to help.

He's working on a figure drawing book, but in the meantime, he's posted a tutorial on drawing feet over at Muddy Colors

I've only just read it once, but here are what I thought the big takeaways were:
  • The ankle is over the arch of the foot, not the heel.
  • Shins are straight. It's the other details of the foreleg that give it a curved appearance.
  • Feet will look weird unless you draw them in perspective.

But don't take my word for it. Check out the tutorial, which has tons of lovely and informative illustrations.

Oh thank goodness, you have no idea how genuinely secretly very concerned I was that you would retreat into the void of the internet forever. D:

Nah. Just for a few months or years at a time. I'm, uh...not good at posting stuff regularly. Planning to work on that this year. (Though my vanishing from BumbleKing was more an issue with not getting my comics and wanting to avoid spoilers...I'm kinda over it now, but it's a bit late for that.)

Thanks so much for caring!

Regarding some posts in a certain thread you made, I must ask this.

If fan-fiction is illegal, the why do we have people on deviantART who make fan-fiction?

Also, we even have this website: www.fanfiction.net/ So why is that website still up if fan-fiction is illegal?

Also, Ian said that the plans he's going to release will not be used by Archie Comics Publications at all, so they really won't be involved.

Fanfic is illegal to begin with, because it's taking other people's copyrighted material and using it to make derivative works without their permission.

However, it's not illegal if (a) it's Fair Use or (b) there's some permission (even implicit permission) from the copyright holder.

When it comes to Sonic, I think it's generally pretty safe. We know for a fact that fan art is okay because Sega (and officially licensed outlets like Archie) occasionally come right out and ask for it. Fanfic is a bit less clear-cut, but Sega has a reputation for being pretty cool with fan works generally, so there's a good chance there is implicit permission.

Parody stories are a textbook example of fair use, so something like Endlame (wow, I need to get a more recent example) would probably be perfectly legal regardless of how Sega felt about fanfic.

As for sites like fanfiction.net, they can stay up even if the content is illegal because the infringing content was posted by users, not the site operators. In the U.S., at least, there's a special provision in copyright law that says (roughly) that Web sites aren't generally responsible for copyright infringement committed by their users. However, the site does have to take down infringing content when the copyright owner points it out to them. This is, for instance, why YouTube can exist even though people upload music and movies illegally, but those illegal videos get taken down sooner or later. Look up DMCA notice and takedown for more info.

If fanfic were always and everywhere illegal, fanfiction.net couldn't exist, because the point of it would obviously be to encourage its users to engage in copyright infringement. However, since some fanfic is legal, fanfiction.net can get by with notice and takedown. There is one common mistake you should be aware of: Notice and takedown only protects the folks that run the site; it doesn't mean everything on the site is OK. It may be that material is illegal but hasn't been caught yet.

When it comes to Ian Flynn's unused plans, it doesn't really matter if Archie is involved or not. Really, they don't have any rights to the Sonic material anyway: They apparently never got the rights to Ken Penders' (and possibly other writers' and artists') stuff in the first place, and anything they did get they signed over to Sega. But it doesn't look like Ian is actually writing the stories. He's just making a public statement about the kinds of stories he would have written if things hadn't changed. I'd run this past a lawyer first to be sure, but as far as I can tell it's a reasonably clear-cut case of fair use. If he were making his own Mobius: 35 Years Later comics on the side, he'd be in big trouble, but for what he plans on doing, I think he'll be fine.

As usual, keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer and am only repeating what I've learned from various things I've read online. You can get better information by going straight to the source: The U.S. Copyright Office has lots of material. And since this stuff is so tricky, even for lawyers, I recommend you make an appointment to talk to a lawyer who specializes in copyright issues rather than relying heavily on anything I've written or even what you read on the Copyright Office's site.

At any rate, the short answer to "If fan-fiction is illegal, the why do we have people on deviantART who make fan-fiction?" is that we have people on deviantArt who don't really care whether what they do is legal or not. Fortunately, dA also has a Q&A video with an actual real-life lawyer-type guy discussing the legallity of fan art. Some of that probably won't apply to fan fiction, but it's an interesting video anyway.
